In 2021, I wrote a short story for a competition — it had to be a romance, and include a noisy neighbour. It was the first time I’d ever written romance, and a lot of fun. My story, called Nest Egg, didn’t make it through the second round. I was disappointed.
But on the same day I got that knockback, I heard about the Newcastle Short Story award. I tweaked one or two lines, and sent off my story, again. I was shortlisted! Just shows you how subjective the reading and judging process is.
